Chatpay: Where money moves through conversation
A payments app for everyday Nigerians where sending money is as natural as sending a message — QR, Ajo savings, split bills, all in one flow.

OVERVIEW
The Brief
"Nigerian fintech is functional but cold. Chatpay's opportunity was to make money feel social — the way it already is in everyday life."
The client came with a rough idea — a payments app that felt different from Opay or Palmpay. The vision: money transfers as natural as messaging, scanning a QR code with group Ajo savings built in digitally.
As the sole designer, I owned everything from user research to the final clickable prototype.

CORE CHALLENGE
Chat and payments in one seamless flow
The hardest problem wasn't the payments — it was making the transition from conversation to transaction feel like one gesture, not two apps glued together.
The "Send money" panel slides up from the bottom of the active chat thread. The conversation stays visible. The numpad and amount are right there. The user never leaves the chat.
CHAT · SEND MONEY PANEL
When a user taps send inside a chat, the payment panel overlays the bottom half of the conversation. The thread and the transaction live in the same screen simultaneously.
AJO SAVINGS
Making an informal tradition feel official
Ajo is Nigeria's rotating savings system — a group contributing a fixed amount each cycle, one person collecting the full pot each round. Chatpay formalises it without killing the communal feel.
Cycle position, payout schedule, member status — all visible at a glance. Setup walks through amount, frequency, dates, and member invites with real-time status tracking.
AJO · GROUP DASHBOARD
A liability disclaimer sits inside the group screen — "Chatpay is not liable for missed payments..." This builds trust through transparency, making the feature feel more credible, not less.

REFLECTION
What this project taught me
Chatpay sharpened one thing above all else: making complexity disappear. The more features a product carries, the more intentional every hierarchy decision has to be. The chat-payment integration was technically complex — but if it felt complex to the user, it had failed.
Working solo from brief to handoff also meant I had to be the researcher, strategist, and executor simultaneously — forcing a discipline where every decision had to be grounded in what the user actually needed at that moment.
